On January 21, 2013, the 57th Inaugural Ceremonies took off in a grand style. Charles E. Schumer, the current Chairman of the Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies for President Barack H. Obama’s 2nd inauguration, served as the master of ceremonies and gave a tremulously powerful opening speech during the Call to Order and Welcome Remarks. Before he stepped off the podium, he left us with this: “America always rises to the occasion.” That day, America managed to do so again. Doing their best to keep the nation’s standards high, the president, his family, fellow cabinet members, and guests rose in stunning and celebratory formal wear as the entire Nation watched our 44th president swear into office.
With his hand on the Bible, the man of the hour stood proud with poise as he repeated and declared the oath to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts (wearing his own refined and required formal wear, a black robe worn by each member to the Supreme Council). Dressed in classic attire, Obama wore a dark suit and overcoat paired with a tuxedo shirt and a brilliant blue formal necktie that held a subtle pattern. Keeping with tradition, his right hand man, Vice President Joe Biden, wore a similar style with a tie colored in a darker hue. Later in the night, during the Commander in Chief’s Inaugural Ball, they spun American excellence on its ear sporting 2013’s latest comeback: the bow tie. Biden, who wore a silk black bow tie over his white tuxedo shirt with pleated front, was dimmed by our head of state, who boldly sported a vivid white bow tie, accentuating his black 2-button tuxedo with notch lapel.
The inauguration brought many familiar faces to the U.S. Capitol. John Mayer stood in the crowd at the Capitol alongside his girlfriend, fellow musician Katy Perry – who caused fireworks with her bright coat featuring orange stripes that demanded attention. Mayer made his own steady waves with a calm blue formal silk necktie as he hid behind the square, his disguise helped by his black sunglasses and a black overcoat. As Beyonce sang the National Anthem , her husband was spotted looking rather distinguished – Jay-Z appeared on the scene with an air of sophistication in a heather gray suit that was heavily fitted to the contour of his body. He topped the look with sleek aviators and a midnight blue formal scarf over a cornflower blue necktie.
Not customarily seen as a hub for trendsetting , the political world actually provides its democracy with ample American style in dignified apparel. Michelle Obama, our nation’s first lady, who is notorious for her elegant and defined fashion choices, is donating all the clothing and accessories worn that evening to the National Archives.
“It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began,” said President Obama during his Inauguration speech as he accepted his new term in office. Hopefully, the American people will not only take his progressive words to heart but do so with exceptional style.
