It’s a four word phrase that can evoke a reaction that varies from happiness and excitement to reluctance and fear.
We as people have to face this question at some point in our lives, and it affects not only our significant other but our friends and family as well. Therefore when the male fiancee proposes marriage to his girlfriend, it should be memorable, creative, and breathtaking. Unfortunately not all of us were blessed with a creative mind, especially when it regards something that is as romantic as a marriage proposal. If you happen to be one of these people, then you’re in luck. Here are some things to think about when proposing to the lady you love.
First, you want to consider what a good location is for proposing. When coming up with ideas, be mindful of what your girlfriend likes and go from there. If she’s a reserved person, then take the chivalrous approach. Perhaps setting up a romantic dinner at home would be the most ideal location. You could even make it a surprise dinner. Tell your girlfriend to dress up for a special affair, while you don a classy, double breasted tuxedo, complete with a fancy bow tie and elegant cufflinks. When she shows up, make sure you have everything already set up so that she’ll realize that the evening is going to be spent at your home – dim lights, soft music, food and wine prepared like it’s a 5-star meal on the table. Once the mood is set and you see nothing but a huge smile on her face, that would be the optimal time for a marriage proposal.
Of course, not all great wedding proposals are required to have the romantic allure that we see in movies and TV shows. There are other unique and fun ways to ask for your girlfriend’s hand in marriage. If your girlfriend happens to be the outgoing and outdoorsy type, then think spontaneity. Some spontaneous ways to propose can involve activities that you do together. If you are the type of couple who’s adventurous and ready to try new stuff all the time, then maybe it’s time to think about an extreme activity like bungee jumping or skydiving. You can either shout your proposal while jumping or you can ask the big question once the both of you have already jumped and are still hanging upside down on the bungee cord. With skydiving, you can impress your girl by lining your parachute with a sign that says “Will you marry me?” and ripping off your attire after landing to reveal a tuxedo – ala James Bond. Other common, but still adorable ideas are to propose during the halftime of a sporting event, or even while taking an stroll by the beach during sunset. While timing and location must be accounted for, there are other components as well.
When you propose, you want to have a feel for the dramatic – it is important to have confidence and conviction while delivering your speech. These are how rappers and singers are judged, and they readily consider this in order to sell their craft to fans. No, you don’t necessarily have to propose by rapping or singing but if you are capable of either of the two then it might be a novel and memorable idea to do so. My suggestion is to plan out what you’re going to say, and how you are going to say it – practice in front of a mirror or practice in the presence of a friend for feedback. Also, gradually propose to her. Don’t simply say, “will you marry me?” Talk about how long the two of you have been dating, how much fun you have had with her, and how much you care for her and how you plan to take care of her in the future – then get to the proposal. This looks a lot better than simply rushing it.
Lastly, you have to be able to read your significant partner’s emotions. Let’s say you’re preparing to propose while taking a walk in the park. However, she is stressed out because of family issues and pressure from work. In this situation, don’t do it. After all, there is always another day. Make sure that your girlfriend is in good spirits or isn’t distracted by outside pressures before you decide to pop the question. It’ll make the experience a lot more pleasurable for the two of you.
I am sure that all men get nervous when asking the big question – we want things to be perfect and don’t want to mess up. While this is true, by following my three things to consider, nervousness will be mitigated. After following these steps you will be well on your way to marrying the woman of your dreams.
