Autumn Wedding Styles

The perfect season for a special ceremony.

Summer is at its sweltering peak, but with the end of August just a few brief weeks away, the prospect of autumn cool is growing more and more appealing. The fall has something for everyone: The start of Football, Labor Day cookouts, leaf piles, holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. It’s a season both of youthful fun and wiser, more mature romance. In other words, it’s the perfect season for a wedding. If you have any kind of input for your wedding day, it’s what you’re going to wear, and if you’re tying the knot anytime between September and the end of November, you should be sure that your ensemble as a bridegroom reflects the class and taste of the season. Here are just a few thoughts and suggestions for all autumnal husbands-to-be:

To begin with, there’s very little that a traditional peak-lapel tux isn’t appropriate for. No matter what the location or situation, the most conservative choice will be sure make you look every inch the man of the hour. We recommend it in particular for those having a traditional fall wedding, perhaps at a nice Colonial style church or a small New England town hall.

But where’s the fun in wearing an all-purpose tux to an everyday wedding in the best season for outdoors? Whether you’re in rural Maine or the expansive American Southwest, incorporating the time of year into your ceremony is a decision that will make your wedding one to remember. If you decide to hold the ceremony out of doors, something more suitable might be a notch-lapel tux like this navy blue tuxedo with a framed edge; without sacrificing the formality of the occasion, you’ll wear something that acknowledges the season.

A useful compromise might be holding the ceremony inside and having the reception out of doors – autumnal leaves and colors will make the perfect backdrop for a garden reception. In this case traditionalists can stick with a black-tux-with-cummerbund ensemble or relax it a little by wearing a shawl lapel or something along those lines. We recommend this kind of mild dressing down for a smaller, more familiar wedding or secular ceremony.

Ultimately, though, the choice is yours. Fall is a season with different kinds of significance to all types of people. If you and your sweetheart met in college, why not celebrate your wedding during the back-to-school season? If you’re a die-hard football couple, a tailgate-style reception shouldn’t be out of the question. If nothing else, make the fall a season you’ll remember for a number of reasons. Once the leaves start to turn, you’ll always be reminded of you looking your best with your special someone in the crisp autumn air.
