Men’s Formal Wear in Film: 5 Best Prom Moments

Every spring, formal wear for men flourishes because of the start of prom season. Tuxedos fly off the shelves as teens hurry to find the best look for that special event. As an important milestone for almost anyone’s highschool career, it has also become a chance for students to dress up and enjoy the remainder of their time together before the journey to adulthood continues in college. Here are the top 5 moments that we like to watch over and over again. Footloose (1984, 2011) – Even with a hokey storyline of dancing being banned in town after a local accident, this memorable movie excels in its closing scene – glitter flying around and the kids cutting loose show the true essence of prom: having fun. Kevin Bacon and his predecessor Kenny Wormald (2011 remake) dress in a red suede suit and kick off the most famous dance sequence. Thanks to this famous flick, the red tuxedo has become an emblem of 80’s fashion. [caption id="attachment_1569" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Wear a red tuxedo and make moves like Jagger. Travolta rocked that scene wearing a black tux with a pink tuxedo shirt, referencing the unique color combo teens favored for formal wear during that era. Fox rocks away on his guitar with a rousing rendition of “Johnny Be Good.” Another film that pays tribute to 50’s formal wear fashion, Fox sports a fedora, a classy tuxedo accessory that compliments any color scheme. Gore aside, 70’s tuxedos were a little more simplistic, but it was hard to focus on judging the fashion with all the brutal deaths occurring. The scene opens on step siblings, Sam and Patrick, dancing away to coax the titular wallflower, Charlie (played by Logan Lerman), off the wall and join them.  Charlie awkwardly makes his way over to the dance floor in his boxy suit. Clearly standing out from the rest of the crowd, Charlie’s suit is definitely meant for an older crowd. However, he manages to show off a classic look, considering how nerve wracking highschool dances can be. Essentially, Charlie’s suit represents the stiff but sleek men’s formal wear trend of the 90’s.
