The 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival
The 26th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival kicked off on January 2nd in Palm Springs, California. The 11-day festival will be held at various venues throughout Palm Springs. On Saturday night, some of the brightest stars in Hollywood walked the red carpet at the festival’s awards gala, which was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Since the awards are being held in advance of the Golden Globes and the Oscars, this year’s festival wins may also foreshadow further honors for stars like Julianne Moore, Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, and Reese Witherspoon.
Veteran actor Robert Duvall won the festival’s Icon Award for his performance as the conflicted and enigmatic Judge Joseph Palmer in the movie, “The Judge.” Duvall received the award from “Judge” costar Robert Downey, Jr. Brad Pitt presented the Breakthrough Performance Award, Actor, to David Oyelowo for his performance as Martin Luther King Jr. in the movie “Selma.” Stars Michael Keaton, Laura Dern and Shirley MacLaine were also in attendance for the festivities.
Rosamund Pike won the Breakthrough Performance Award, Actress, for her role in the movie "Gone Girl;" Julianne Moore was awarded the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress, for her role in "Still Alice;" and actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Rory Kinnear and Alex Lawther, were collectively awarded the Ensemble Performance Award, for their performances in the movie "The Imitation Game."

Simmons won the Spotlight Award for his performance as jazz instructor Terence Fletcher in the movie "Whiplash;" and Alejandro G. The stars were stunning on the red carpet. Julianne Moore received her award in a stunning red Delpozo dress; Reese Witherspoon walked the red carpet in a black Michael Kors dress. Rosamund Pike attended in a black silk floral Alexander McQueen. While the male stars wore tailored suits or tuxedos for the event and looked very elegant as they presented and received awards.
Spirits were high at the event, with Brad Pitt leading a singalong to teach participants how to pronounce Oyelowo’s name, and Downey teasingly complaining to the audience that time was wasting – his helicopter was idling.
After the festival awards, anticipation is high that these talented stars will again walk the red carpet and receive additional awards. In previous years, many of the festival award winners have gone on to win Oscars.
Although most people will never attend the Palm Springs International Film Festival, they can still look every bit as sophisticated and elegant as the stars at their own life events, with a classic black tuxedo or simply a formal tuxedo vest. Whether you go classic or trendy, a tuxedo always makes you look like a star.
