Whether you’re having a large or small wedding, there are certain dress code rules to remember when it comes to wedding attire for men—especially the groom. In this article, we are going to explore the five most frequently asked wedding formal wear questions.

  1. How should men dress in a formal wedding?
For suits, there are a variety of options. For example, if you’re dressing in traditional wear, you can opt for a gray cutaway jacket with gray stripe pants and a white wing collar or a laydown color. Accessories may include a pearl gray colored ascot, vest or even a waist coat. If you're aiming for a more contemporary look, you can wear a cutaway suit in various colors. For this effect, the pants should match the jacket. It should be worn with a formal white shirt. Accessories should include a cummerbund or vest with a bow tie that matches the pants and jacket.
  1. Should I wear a tuxedo to a formal wedding?
For men's formal wear (black tie), wearing a tuxedo is still considered good etiquette. You can wear a white vest and tie or replace it with a black tie and cummerbund. For white tie weddings, wear a tuxedo with tails, a white vest and white bow tie. If you are a wedding guest, you don’t necessarily have to wear a tuxedo. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Formal Daytime - Suits
  • Formal Evening – Dark colored tuxedos (or suits)
  • Semi-Formal Daytime – Suits
  • Semi-Formal Evening – Dark colored suits.
  • Informal Daytime – Dress shirts and slacks with a sports jacket
  • Informal Evening – Sports jackets and slacks or suits
  1. Should I rent a tuxedo or buy?
Purchasing a tuxedo for a wedding is a good investment. For one, you can wear your tuxedo on more than one occasion - not just for a wedding. Another benefit of buying a tuxedo is that there is no wear and tear to worry about because you’re the sole owner. There is no guarantee that you will receive access to a new tuxedo when you rent. Plus, there’s no guarantee that the tuxedo you want will be in stock.
  1. What type of suit, shirt and tie should I wear?
If you're aiming for a classic look, try a black or white satin/silk tie with a cummerbund. White and silver tie sets are also suitable. These color choices tend to have a modern look and feel, especially in photographs for years to come. Often times, trendy styles and colors tend to look outdated very quickly. Remember the fluorescent turquoise cummerbunds of the 1980s?  You can’t help, but to laugh when looking at photographs of certain outdated wedding styles. Also, avoid wearing clip-on ties. Believe it or not, you can always tell when a man is wearing a clip-on, especially in photographs. If you want to make a lasting impression, we highly suggest choosing a self-tie formal bow tie or even a pre-tied formal tie from our collection.
  1. What other accessory should I wear?
Cufflinks can really add a nice touch to wedding attire. Make sure you choose silver or pearl if you're getting married during the day. For evening weddings, choose gold or black cufflinks. Bonus: Avoid wearing white suits for evening weddings. If you're wearing a tuxedo, avoid wearing it before 5:00 pm. Do you need to buy a tuxedo for a wedding?
